Tom lived near the racetrack and started going there with friends when he was a kid. When he needed to make some money, he hot walked horses and held them for the horse shoer. He never decided to become a horse shoer, the profession decided for him and has done very well by him. He's raised a family and seen a great deal of the world because of it. He has a perspective on the way the apprentice system used to work and what's become of racing recently.
